3 Lawn Mowing Tips
The Height of the Grass
There are a few things to take into account when you are determining the actual height of your
grass. The time of year you are mowing and the grass type has a huge part to play in this decision. Short
grass will need to be short, and long bladed grass should be approximately two inches.
It's not uncommon for a person to completely forget about the mowing for an uncomfortably long
period of time. If this is the case, then you will need to make sure you take some precautions when you
finally do start the mowing again. The top third of the grass should be cut, and you must avoid cutting any
lower than that. Doing so will hinder your grass's ability to capture sunlight, resulting in a dead
yard.
What do you do if your grass is too high? Well that happens, and you should do it slowly,
cutting the grass in sections. Soon enough the grass will be at the desired height. Naturally you'll have to
do this a few times every week, which is more than usual for most people, but it will keep your grass alive
and well for the foreseeable future.
Spring and Fall are the best times to mow the grass, and during the summer you need to be
careful to keep it within the recommended height. Doing so will keep your grass healthy and you lawn looking
great. Your grass will hold moisture and it will continue to grow properly.
A Time to Mow
Mowing should usually be done in the morning, late afternoon, or early evening. Why? Because
these times are cooler, but they are neither dark or incredibly wet. Wet grass will do a brilliant job of
clogging up your lawn mower, which is exactly why you want to avoid it. If you have ever had the unfortunate
luck to need to clean off the bottom of your lawn mower after mowing a wet law, you know exactly why you
should avoid this climate.
Consistency
You'll want to mow every week and stay consistent with it. Of course during the winter months
you will not need to mow, because most grass will stop growing. One of the exceptions to this is the Kentucky
bluegrass which continues to grow regardless. It must be cut to within two to three inches.
